If you Google Southwold you’ll probably see a lot of bright and sunny and fun photos. We, on the other hand, visited Southwold in December and it couldn’t have been a better time.

As you know we aren’t fans of huge crowds, and we don’t exactly love the hot weather. I have a weakness for the seaside in wintertime. There’s something about the grey skies, the cold winds and the wild waters that make me realise that I’m feeling the force of nature in its purest form.

Just 156 Kms from London, this place is one of the most special in England. It’s pier was built in 1900 and has gone through various restorations and rebuilds and in 2002 it was awarded the pier of the year.

El mejor Fish and Chips

Our first stop was to try the infamous » fish and chips’ – this is a very traditional English dish, but I can assure you that there’s no better way to try it than right at the place where the fishing boats are moored, the same boats that caught this fish. Couldn’t be fresher and the very best quality.

In the fishing harbour there are several restaurants that are just breathing tradition. Kindness and good manners rule in England. What a pleasure to travel around this country. Every time we get to know a new place our love is rekindled – for this culture and these people.

DELICIOSO. No puedo dejar de mencionar que estos platillos van acompañados de la aclaración «sustainably fished and landed by day boats at Lowestoft» lo que significa que es producto de la pesca sostenida y además pescado fresco del día.

With the first bite, our love for the food is also fed. Tasty beer served in the typical English way. And the fish and chips served with mushy peas. Delicious ! With the accompanying declaration that the fish is fresh as possible and ‘sustainably fished» and landed by day boats at Lowestoft.

Just looking at these photos makes my mouth water.

Out of respect for the other people here – this is the only photo I took on the inside. This place was full and I can’t imagine what it must be like in the summer season.

We left the pub with full stomachs and happy hearts and we went for a walk to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the North Sea.

As we walked through the fishing harbour we saw several boats arriving with their haul of fish after a long day.

Total tranquility and the music of the wind and the waves. I dreamt of two chairs and sitting right there for days, eating fresh fish and drinking mate ( Paraguayan tea) – that would be amazing !

We drove a short distance to the town.

No me quiero ir! BELLISIMO BELLISIMO BELLISIMO

This is the town, but not yet. We were still enjoying the seaside area. I don’t want to leave here. I want to stay here forever. There’s no greater feeling than to be in such close contact with nature and to feel that you’re on your own. We were with friends, and yet we were isolated and alone in the best sense of the word. It was the whole beach just for us – just beautiful !

Empieza a atardecer y tenemos que movernos si queremos sacar algunas fotos.

It started to get dark so we had to move on if we wanted to take more photos.

Esas casitas, que envidia!

These cottages – envy !

Before we left we saw the arrival of one of the fishing boats . We were told that when a fishing boat arrives surrounded by seagulls – it means that it’s been a good day. The gulls surround the boat because they know that the fish are being gutted and they enjoy helping dispose of the innards.

The streets of the town are damp as it continues to drizzle with rain, but this doesn’t stop us looking around.

I was really surprised to see how many people were in the shops and the amount of cars parked on the road. In my country, the beach is only for the summertime. Well actually where I come from there aren’t any beaches, but people do travel a long way to get to a beach or a lake. In winter time everyone hides and almost go into hibernation. Nobody enjoys the seaside when it’s cold. But here it’s another story. These seaside towns make the most of the winter and the summer. The views change completely and each one is totally different in its own beauty.
We decided that we would definitely return one day in summertime. Who knows when.

The first recorded dates of Southwold go back to 1086 and in 1659 there was a huge fire that damaged several buildings. Those buildings weren’t rebuilt and they were replaced by huge village greens.
A few years later in 1672, the battle of Sole bay took between English and French fleets on one side and the Dutch on the other. The fighting took place on the Southwold coast and there’s a cannon from that very battle in the town, which you will see later.

There are many different types of houses ranging from very modest, very luxurious, small, big, white or painted with bright colours.

What is the most traditional aspect of the town ? what appears on the postcards and souvenirs ? – it’s the pier that we spoke about, which won the pier award in 2002. It’s famous not just for its businesses and restaurants and attractions, but also for its colourful beach huts. We didn’t look at them close up, only from above. But we will do next time.

The original purpose for the beach hut was to have a place where you could find shade from the sun, to change into your swimming costume, and also a place to guard your personal belongings. Over time the restrictions on new constructions of beach huts along with them being big tourist attractions have made the possibility of actually owning one, practically impossible for most people. Beach huts can be found on many beaches throughout the world, but these particular ones on Southwold beach can only be bought for an asking price of 100,000 pounds..! They are leasehold properties with a lease of approximately 30 – 80 years. Bearing in mind, that you aren’t allowed to live in them and they have no electricity or water connection and realistically, for that price you could buy a small flat somewhere else.

The sale price of a beach hut at Southwold: here

This is one of the most traditional seaside towns in England and there aren’t many beach huts and so it’s not often that one comes up for sale – and when they do they are very expensive. Realising all this we put to one side any notion of owning a beach hut here and we continued on our tour of the town.

Here is another important feature of the town – The lighthouse. If you look at the photo below to the right is the cannon we spoke of earlier.

This lighthouse was built in 1890 and has had electricity since 1938. It’s 31 metres high and is considered one of the most important historical buildings of the town. For lighthouse lovers – It’s possible to go inside and have a guided visit on certain days.

The Adnams brewery was established in 1872 and at the same time acquired the Sole Bay Brewery, dated 1818. The brewery is the towns largest employer. It won the best pub award by The Good Pub Guide in 2011. It also produces its own gin and vodka and single malt whiskey. You can take a tour of the brewery and distillery – another good reason to return one day.

St. Edmunds church is another place wee are looking forward to visiting. But for now, this photo allows us to spy on it a bit from the outside.

Is it me or does everything look like something from a fairy tale? the buildings, the details, colours and signs make every shop look so unique.

You know my weakness for street signs. The one here stands out, as does the one below.

And as the sun goes down, we also say goodbye. We hope that you have enjoyed this tour and we hope to be here again one day with new cities and places to discover.
We promised that we would return to Southwold one day to get to know it even better.
So I’ll say my farewells and to say that I’ve loved this trip.
