Londres (Parte 1) Big Ben, Trafalgar Square y toda la decoración navideña del West End / London (Part 1) Big Ben – Trafalgar Square and the West End Christmas lights

London is so fantastic and so amazing that its most famous attractions are a part of everyday life: red buses, the rain, its flag, underground signs, telephone boxes etc. Apart from being considered the friendliest city for tourists, it’s also one of the most balanced. I would even venture to say that it’s the most balanced city in the world. It’s classified as an Alpha City – with maximum points scored along with New York. I invite you to come and discover it with us and get to know what it does that warrants it being called ”The City”.

Por equilibrada quiero decir esa mezcla de modernidad, cultura, limpieza, historia, edificios antiguos, nuevos, arte moderno, arte callejero, amabilidad, limpieza, originalidad, creatividad, divulgación internacional y muchos adjetivos más que podrán agregar mentalmente mientras vamos recorriendo Londres.

I use the word balance to describe its perfect mix of modern, culture, cleanliness, history, old and new buildings, modern art, street art, originality, creativity, its international flavour and so many other adjectives that could be mentally added as we travel around London.

Wherever you are, be it in a train station on the outskirts of London or at the most central underground station –there’s cleanliness and friendliness. There’s an unexplainable sense of harmony that can be felt everywhere. The stations have maintained the old style they were built in and added modern technology and so you sense that this city hasn’t conformed, it hasn’t stayed behind yet it hasn’t forgotten its past – it’s adapted and included the past in its present.

The trains are in perfect condition and give out free newspapers every morning. This is an indication of something that I’ll explain later – but don’t forget this point as I will go deeper with it later on.

As we were arriving by train our first encounter was with one of the most popular tourist attractions – The London Eye.

We arrived at Charing Cross which is the most central train station in London. It’s so central that there is a plaque called zero milestone. This is where distances are measured to and from London and its found where the cross used to be, that gave its name to the station. This cross was placed there at the death of Queen Eleanor. When she died the body of Queen Eleanor was carried to Lincoln where she was embalmed. Her body was then sent to London, taking 12 days to reach Westminster Abbey. Wooden crosses were erected at the places where her funeral procession stopped overnight. Later on her husband, King Edward the 1st had stone crosses made in honour of his wife. The cross of Charing Cross corresponds to the last stop before Westminster.

The name Charing probably comes from word ‘cerring’, a bend, as it stands on the outside of a bend in the River Thames

This station is the same as the others in that we see once again the perfection of the old fashioned mixing with the modern. Clean, impeccable and well sign posted and well lit. The train stations are beautiful and full of character. From the very first moment – we were in love with London and we’d only been here 4 minutes!

Today the cross of Charing Cross is represented by this 21 metre monument.

Outside the station we came across our biggest surprise. We discovered that the big red double decker buses are normal public transport. We always thought that they were a mere tourist attraction with an old fashioned design – but we were wrong. The London buses are part of everyday life. This gave us the constant feeling that we were caught up in a London postcard. Eventually this postcard was made complete with the phone boxes and underground signs. Not forgetting the London cabs which have a very particular design, which we will see later.

Así de magica y hermosa es Londres. Bella en su cotidianeidad.

That’s the magic and beauty of London –stunning in its everyday life.

The church here in the background is diagonal to Charing Cross and it’s called St Martin in the Fields. It has a curious element in the form of a cross. This is an Anglican Church with a cross that practically goes unnoticed. If you stare at the glass window you can see the form of a cross that is in fact a stained glass window that from within stands out a lot, but from the outside could be confused with just being a simple window.

In front of the church is the famous Trafalgar Square. This is one of the most famous squares in the world. On this square is the entrance to the National Gallery, behind which we find the National Portrait Gallery. We have a post covering the museums to look at later.

To the right is the entrance to the National Gallery and in front are the fountains and Nelsons Column.

Observen el simbolo en las columnas. Interesante verdad.

Look at the symbols on the lampposts. They are very interesting and they correspond to of the one of many myths and legends of Westminster. It’s said that Westminster council receive constant calls to verify the true meaning of these symbols.

Legend has it that after meeting Coco Chanel, the Duke of Westminster, Hugh Richard Arthur Grosvenor, was so in love with her that to surprise her he had all the lampposts in Westminster adorned with her initials, alongside a W – the Duke’s crest. Coco Chanel turned his proposal of marriage down saying: “There may have been several Duchesses of Westminster, but there is only one Coco Chanel”.

The true story says that the meeting happened in 1925 and the lamp-posts weren’t engraved until 1950 and that the letter W stands for Westminster and CC stands for City council. But I prefer the Coco Chanel version, so I’m going to stay with that story.

As it was getting later in the day, we had the sun in front of us which gave a different illumination to the square. From here we can see in the centre – “Nelsons Column”. Nelson’s column is a monument in memory of Admiral Horatio Nelson who died in the Battle of Trafalgar.

Many locals and tourists gather here on a daily basis. This square has had it dose of controversy and one of these is a constant battle with pigeons. People used to feed the pigeons and sellers would take advantage and sell food to feed them. The population grew so much that measures had to be taken to reduce the numbers. The most memorable was to hire a falconer to disperse of the pigeons with trained hawks.

Another curiosity here in the square is “The smallest police station in England”. It’s a station that’s so small that nobody realizes it’s even there. Only one person can fit it at any given time, it was built in 1926 to control different demonstrations in the square. Now it’s just used to store cleaning products.

Before I forget – the blue cockerel has little to do with the rest of the square and seems out of place. The empty plinth in the north-west corner of the square – which has become known as the «Fourth Plinth» – has been used to show a series of specially commissioned artworks. This year it’s displaying the work of a German artist, Katharina Fritsch. Each work is on display for 18 months.

A new sculpture on the fourth plinth was unveiled on 6 March 2015 called «The Gift Horse.» The sculpture is a model of a horse’s skeleton with a live display of the London Stock Exchange.

From here we go on foot to the most famous BIG BEN, which is actually officially called Elizabeth Tower

I have a weakness for Street signs and here is a very traditional London Street sign.

Scotland Yard is the name of the Metropolitan Police and a name that’s been made famous by Sherlock Holmes. The intelligent Sherlock always outwitted the Metropolitan Police.

Here we see the entrance to Horse guard’s parade. It is the site of the annual ceremonies of Trooping the Colour, which commemorates the monarch’s official birthday and has even hosted polo matches. Next to this we see the famous number 10 Downing Street which is the official residence of the Prime Minister. It used to be open for the public to walk down but since 1989, entering Downing Street has required passing through a security checkpoint.

In front of this building, in the middle of the Street we find a memorial for the women who served in the Second World War. We visited London during these special dates that were remembering the beginning of the First World War and the monuments honouring the dead are decorated with poppies. This flower has been used since 1921 to remember the veterans and those killed in battle. Their origin comes from a poem called Flanders Field that talks about war and the poppy fields. It was written by a Canadian and the poppy is used on remembrance days. On this trip we saw many people wearing poppies on their clothes, on their cars and big poppy displays in the cities as well.

This is the gate that would take us to 10 Downing Street – The prime minister’s residence.

On the way we could see one of the 5000 pubs that there are in this city. London is famous for its pubs and I can assure you that if ever you visit one you will be surprised. They are decorated with chandeliers and a lot of wood. Here you have to get used to drinking standing up – hardly anyone sits down.

We arrived at Parliament. Here is where many of the biggest attractions of London are situated – Big Ben, House of Lords, House of Commons and the Palace of Westminster and of course, Westminster Abbey ( where Prince William and the duchess Catherine were married ) and the statue of Winston Churchill.

Something which I can assure you of is that I wasn’t expecting to be so surprised by this tower – but I was. I still can’t find a photo that truly shows how it is in real life. A friend who was with us said “it looks like a toy” and I think that’s the best description. It does look like a golden toy – it’s almost a gem.

Big Ben is the biggest four faced clock in the world and the third biggest clock tower. The tower is not open to the public, though United Kingdom residents are able to arrange a visit through their Member of Parliament. The tower has no lift, so those visiting have to climb the 334 stairs to the top.The palace is so big that it has a thousand rooms, a hundred stairs, eight bars, a hairdressers and even a shooting range.

One of the most absurd curiosities about the Palace of Westminster that we came across, is the still applied to this day law that- it’s illegal to die there.

Built in 1858, its official name was the Clock Tower and it was changed to the Elizabeth Tower to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee. In reality the Big Ben is actually the bell and not the tower. Just the bell weighs more than 13 tons and the tower is 106 metres high. The clock is famous for its precision and it continues to give the exact time despite damage it suffered during the bombings in the Second World War. It’s so precise and reliable that its recorded when and why it has stopped at any given time and that’s less than 20 times since its construction. This is the place where the famous Guy Fawkes tried to use dynamite to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Thankfully he was arrested. Today – throughout the world, the Guy Fawkes mask is often used in different political demonstrations – particularly by the group “anonymous”.

The 5th of November is known as Guy Fawkes Day or Bonfire Night and is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London, and months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot’s failure.

Today it’s said to be suffering structural damage due to the extensive digging for the underground trains.

The reason behind the name Big Ben isn’t clear at all. There are hundreds of explanations in hundreds of books. Some say it’s named after a boxer and others say it’s the name of the foreman at the construction site. In reality nobody seems to know.

The bell was built at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which, according to the Guinness book of records, is the oldest bell manufacturer in Great Britain, with more than 500 years of Bell manufacturing. To visit this foundry you have to make an appointment at least a year in advance. Amongst its most famous works are the already mentioned Big Ben and also– the liberty Bell which symbolizes the Independence of the U.S.A – That’s Interesting?

On the next road from here is the place where so many people take photos and the place I always wanted to visit. It’s a spot that allows you to include one of the famous red telephone boxes and have Big Ben in its entire splendor in the background, and thus enabling you, to take one of the most traditional photos of London.

Here was where we came across the first of many “Red Bus” that we saw scattered all over London. They are 60 sculptures (that have already been removed) to celebrate the year of the bus.

The sculptures were painted and adorned by 60 different artists and we came across several on our travels around London. These sculptures were auctioned off and some of the money went to different charities and the rest to the London Transport fund.

Every time we went down into another station we were surprised. The design of this one: modern, roomy and unique.

Let’s not forget that with its 150 years – the London Underground is the oldest in the world. Its logo “Mind the Gap” is known throughout the world. Its affectionately called by Londoners – The Tube (the tube because of the shape of the tunnels) – According to studies more than 3 million people a day use its 11 lines and its 270 stations. Some of the stations are more than 50 metres underground y they were used as shelters during bombings of London in the Second World War. Many people were born at this time, in the underground stations and one of those is the famous Jerry Springer.

The sad part is that statistics show that more than 50 people a year commit suicide jumping in front of tube trains. However, there is a continual increase in security to prevent these occurrences.

Rush hour is an overwhelming flow of people coming in and out of the stations, so it’s best to avoid these areas of London at this time.

We go past Baker Street, but well stop by there later. There’s so much of London still to cover.

From here and before it gets dark or rains – we head to one of the places I’ve always wanted to visit. Being a big fan of the Beatles, I’ve always dreamed of visiting the legendary Abbey Road.

It’s worth taking a picnic to this place and to just sit and watch impatient drivers who are constantly waiting for tourists, who are taking their time, to have their photos taken on the famous zebra crossing. They are trying to replicate the famous 1969 Beatles album cover ‘Abbey Road’.

The Street signs on this road have been placed high up so they can’t be stolen.

It’s almost dark and so we head to Covent Garden.

Covent Garden is an area of London that apart from its famous market – it’s also host to the famous Royal Opera House. Leading up to it there’s renowned local and international shops. We visited at Christmas time and the Christmas lights and decoration of this city is something I will always remember. It was outstanding and every street with a different theme. There’s no cost spared and the streets look like they are full of stars.

I remember standing here and feeling a lump in my throat. I was full of emotion. It’s the city that everyone dreams to see but where nothing is diluted in the same way as a theme park. Here you don’t see big groups of tourists; you don’t see the sellers with their souvenirs trying to take advantage of the travelers. No! – London is London. You’re in London, and every step that you take surprises you – but in a good way. Everything is bigger and better and more beautiful and more special than any postcard can portray.

There’s joyful activity where ever you go. Numerous expressions of art in the streets. Here in London the street art isn’t thinking of the tourist. There are people in the streets reciting poems or acting out chapters of Shakespeare. Here – culture isn’t taking your photo in front of a museum – here you live and breathe culture.

In the city the buildings are in perfect condition. Covent Garden, as it is today has been like this since 1830. Well looked after, nicely painted and without having lost its essence or its beauty.

En The Pie Shop probamos nuestro primer platillo 100% local.

In The Pie Shop we tried our first 100% local food. Lamb and mint pie with mashed potato is one of the best things I’ve tasted in my life. The food in London doesn’t disappoint!

We leave Covent Garden and head out on the streets.

Muchas luces y mucho ruido. Los ojos no saben a donde mirar. Todo llama la atención.

We arrived at the West End – at Theatre Land. This would be Broadway in the USA. More than 30 productions are showing at any given time in different places. The biggest plays and musicals in the world are being presented in this place. It’s the dream of many actors to be able to perform here. It’s the epicenter of the spectacular and for many it’s the mecca of stage acting. Many, who despite already having a successful acting career elsewhere – are dazzled and besotted by the London Theatre Land.

Here at the backstage door we can see several people waiting to trap some famous artist as they are leaving their work. There are a lot of lights and a lot of noise and your eyes don’t know where to look first. Everything is clamouring for your attention.

Leicester Square – It’s in this place where the big red carpet opening nights take place. It’s here where the big actors of this world come to present their new films.

It was night time so we couldn’t take many photos – but this is what it looks like only it had more Christmas lights.

On the square is one of the 5 “M&M’s World” that there are in the whole world. Is M&M English? Yes and No. M&M’s are based on Smarties, which are English. The Mars brothers, an North American Company bought the rights to this product and to sell them in the USA – and then changed the name.

This world with its five floors has everything that you could ever possibly imagine, with relation to these little sugary friends. There’s “Laboratories” where you can observe their production. Coloured walls where you can put together your own selection. Huge images that reproduce scenes, such as Abbey Road. Without a doubt coming here was well worth it.

We left here and walked to Piccadilly Circus – the heart of the West End.

In the background of the photo we can see the huge decorated balls which are at the start of China town – we will be visiting there later.

Las enormes pantallas nos avisan que llegamos. A la derecha el museo de Ripley.

The huge screens let us know we had arrived. To the right is Ripley’s museum.

It’s believed that the name Piccadilly comes from a tailors that was very successful selling “piccadills” with stiff collars with scalloped edges, and the name circus is from the Latin word meaning «circle», is a round open space.

On the side is the statue of Anteros, greek mythoology. There are hundreds of different versions of this story but here’s what I believe to be true. Aphrodite – the mother of Eros was worried because he wasn’t growing and she complained and Temis – the god of justice said : “love without passion never grows” so Anteros was born – the brother of Eros.

Antero avenged the unwanted love that was produced by Eros, because Eros – (known as Cupid in Roman mythology) fired his arrows whilst blindfolded, he had arrows of love and other arrows of indifference which occasionally went astray.

Here we see Anteros, who for many is the true God of love; No blindfolds.

MARAVILLOSO.

We got on one of these buses to enjoy the Christmas lights from the top deck. It was great.

We went past Hamleys which is the biggest and oldest toy shop in the world. With more than 50,000 toys on its 7 floors it’s a recognized institution in the city and in the world. It started in 1760 and moved to this location in 1881.

During November and December 2014 – 50 Paddington Bear sculptures – painted by 50 different artists were scattered around London. They were there, not just to promote the new Paddington bear film but also to celebrate the culture and traditions of London. They were auctioned off and the money raised was given to the NSPCC – National Society for the protection of cruelty to children.

This is Bond Street – The Street with the most exclusive shops in the world. So exclusive that even the buses don’t go down there.

After seeing this show of colours and light we are going to bed and we’ll wait for you next Monday with so much more of London.
